On May 23, 1999, by best friend was killed in an accident. He was like a brother to me. Obviously, that was a major shock to me and losing him changed my life drastically. That didn't directly lead me to search for Christ, though. Two months later, there was a message in our school bulletin (I am a teacher) about one of our counselor's starting up a bible study. At first I blew it off, but I was pretty good friends with her, so I kept in the back of my mind. Then it hit me...I'd do it for Dan. Dan had been a Christian and had been active in many different bible studies through the years. So I went. I slowly started to change. It's amazing how just reading the Bible can make a difference. Then the counselor who started the bible study invited me to her church. I said maybe, but didn't go. After all, we have 2 kids, one of which was only about 6 months old at the time, so it was too much of a hassle. (Although we always said we were going to start taking the kids to church when they were old enough. Well, after about the tenth time she invited me, we finally decided to go. It had a contemperary service (which I wasn't used to), and my wife and I were very impressed, and knew that we would come back the following week...and we did. Going to church, along with the bible study made the difference. My life changed. I became happier now that I had my Christ the Lord of my life. You see, before all this, I had considered myself a Christian, because I believed in God, and believed that Jesus is the Son of God, but my life didn't show it. I certainly didn't act like a Christian. I think it was because I accepted Christ as my Savior, but not as my Lord. I had to let him take over my heart. My wife and I were both baptized in December of that year. We are now very active in the church and in bible studies, and are so much happier. I used to be a pretty heavy drinker--I'd go out drinking with friends 2-3 times a month. Drinking to get drunk--not just a beer or two. I used to swear often, talk about people behind their back, etc., but now my life has changed. Do I still struggle with these things sometimes? Yes. But God rules my life now, and I am so much happier because of it.

Maybe you are like I was. A person who thinks that believing that Jesus is the Son of God is enough. You think that you can still go out and do what you please, not go to church, not read the Bible, etc. It doesn't work that way. Satan believes that Jesus is the Son of God, but is he going to heaven? Not a chance. Do you have to stop doing bad things before accepting Christ? No! If so, I would never have come to Christ. I was still drinking heavily, swearing, etc. when I first accepted Jesus, but he changed my heart. He made it so I don't want to do those things anymore. And if you would have looked in my heart...way down deep, a few years ago, you would have seen that the reason I hadn't truly accepted Jesus was because I didn't want to give all those things up. Don't worry about any of that. If you want peace in your life, to never feel alone, to be assured of eternal life, you just have to ask Jesus to come into your heart. Your prayer should be something like this.

"Dear Lord,

I know I'm not perfect. In fact, I am a sinner. Please forgive me for (insert sins here...). Jesus, please come into my heart. I believe that you are the Son of God and that you died so we could be forgiven. Please help me to be more like you. In Jesus' name...Amen."

If you have prayed that prayer (or one similar) then you are on your way. Now, find a church home. A church that teaches from the Bible. (Just make sure that teach the diety of Jesus Christ). Find one that touches your heart. We knew that we found the right church when we looked forward to going to church every Sunday. It's a "different strokes for different folks" kind of thing. If you like contemperary, find a church that has a Praise Band with guitars and the works. If you like the old hymns, find a church that still uses the hymnals. As long as the church is preaching the gospel, then it doesn't matter how they do it.

Also, start reading the bible. In fact, if possible, join a bible study. Bible studies are a great way to get life-changing knowledge out of the Bible.

If you have read all this, and aren't a Christian, I believe that God has led you to read this. If it weighs heavy on your heart, that means God is working on you, waiting for you to respond. Please do.
